Winsley Hall drive Sunday 14th July 2024
The Winsley Hall drive took place by kind invitation of Mr Charles Whitaker and we began by parading on the lawn in front of the house for the presentation of the Moonstroller Trophy for the Best Turnout. This trophy was originally presented to the Church Stretton Driving Group by Mrs June Whitaker in memory of her friend Jane Brindley and her famous driving pony Eden View Moonstroller. CSDG has now become part of BDS Shropshire and following the sad death of Mrs Whitaker last year she too is commemorated by this award. Mr Whitaker was unable to be present so he very kindly arranged for Mr Michael Rowson to act as judge. Mr Rowson is the author of the book ‘Just Born In Time’ about his 34 years of hunt service in the Shropshire hills. He rode until he was in his 70s and then returned to carriage driving so we were privileged to have the benefit of his experience. He gave all the turnouts a very thorough inspection before choosing a delighted Sue, Bev and Sam the Man to receive this honour. He was then presented with a bottle of whisky on behalf of BDS Shropshire to show our appreciation.
Smart hats were then exchanged for hard hats and high vis and we set off on a drive of almost 12 miles through beautiful countryside in memory of Joe Davies who was the late husband of our AAC Elizabeth Lawrence BEM. Lizzie and Joe had mapped out the route together and it remained one of Joe’s favourites.
In spite of a dubious forecast the weather was kind to us and on our return to Winsley Hall we were able to enjoy a relaxed picnic and presentation of rosettes.
Those taking part were Sue, Bev and Sam, Felicity, Avril and Georgie, Edith, Tania and Tally, Bryony, Mike and Red and Jennifer, Helen and Corky. Russell, Pat, Nicola and family brought three young horses to give them some experience in company and they were driven as a single and a tandem.

Many thanks to everyone who helped to make this such an enjoyable day.
